Relationship between self-esteem, self-efficacy and academic procrastination among medical students

Introduction Recent studies proved that academic procrastination is a very common pervasive problem has negative impact on general well-being, causing distress, anxiety, remorse and unhappiness. It could also result in poor performance negatively affect students’ satisfaction with themselves their life. Objectives The aim of this study was to explore the influence self-esteem self-efficacy among Tunisian medical students. Methods We conducted cross-sectional, descriptive analytical students from Tunisia. Data were collected through an anonymous online questionnaire, exploring sociodemographic characteristics, “Tuckman Procrastination Scale” (TPS), “Rosenberg’s scale” (RSES) “General Self-Efficacy Short (GSESS). Results A total 133 participants completed questionnaire. Their mean age 26 ± 3,8 years, sex-ratio (F/M) 4,5. Among them 87.2% engaged procrastination, 57,1% showed low 55,6% perceived as non-effective. GSESS score higher males (p=0.019) TPS correlated RSES (p<0.001; r=-0.372). positively r=0.44). No relationship between GSESS. Conclusions Even though most time considered maladaptive detrimental behavior psychological cost, some authors consider it acting beneficial way, reflects self-reliance, autonomy self-confidence knowing they are able finish task time.
